In case you are wondering no I didn't fall off the planet, I had a baby!
Alexander Lucas was born at 34 weeks gestation via emergency c-section on November 3, 2011.
I created this video of the my pregnancy and the birth of Alexander.

I don't have much time to design or scrap right now because Alex was a preemie and is having some problems. So all my time is on him or my older son Anthony.

I finally finished this month's Template Challenge for Natural Designs in Scrapbooking

I decided to change things up with the template challenge in 2012. Each month there will be a DOUBLE template created. The left side will be free to download for the challenge. When you participate in this challenge and upload your finished layout before the deadline in our gallery and in the challenge forum, you will receive the right side as a thank you for joining me in this challenge.

Since this challenge is starting late you have until Feb 16 to upload the left side of the template. After the deadline all those who have participated will receive a PM from me with the coupon code for the right side.

Another public service announcement to back up your work!!

I hoped the Geek Squad would be able to get my files off my EHD but they told me they couldn't. I cried for days and days. I lost photos from April 2011 until Aug 2011 including a special vacation we took in Aug. I also lost several scrapbooking files and kits I created. Some weren't even released yet.

My mother and husband took pictures during that time but still thousands and thousands were lost!! Don't cry your eyes out like me, back up your work!

Don't have an issue like I did, stop and back up now.

And this message is for me too.. MARIA BACK UP YOUR WORK!!!!!!!

I used to be an advocate for backing up your work! I even used to post monthly messages to remind all of you to back up your work.

The last time I backed up to my other hard drive I got a message telling me there wasn't enough room. Did I buy another one??????? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

You know where this is going.....

Late Saturday night my EHD fell off the table and onto the floor...and of course it didn't work! I tried and tried but nothing!

Today I went over to Best Buy to the Geek Squad and gave them my External Hard Drive to fix.

They were very nice, took my info and EHD and I even bought another back up EHD.

Less than an hour ago, Matt from the Geek Squad called to tell me it was worse than they thought and they have to ship it out to some super duper Geek Squad place. I have to go back tomorrow morning to fill out more paper work and pay more money! And he still wasn't sure if they could fix it.

I feel sick! Just the photos of my son alone make me upset! All the scrap files I could deal with, but missing pictures from April (the last time I backed up) to August has me very upset.

You know the moral of this story.. stop what you are doing and BACK UP YOUR WORK!!

Back 2 School

We have been super busy over here. My 3 1/2 year old son had eye surgery on July 27 and we have been non-stop every since. I had no time for scrapping or blogging I just spent my days taking care of my little guy who turned into a vampire because the light bothered him so much. I'm happy to report he's feeling better and doing better.

And now we are heading on vacation to relax and enjoy ourselves before he starts school in Sept. I was able to create just 1 thing this month! I didn't even have time to make any freebies...sorry!!!

My son had so much fun yesterday on the train ride he didn't want to leave when it was over.

We had lunch together then stopped by to see my Aunt and Uncle who are celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary!!!
Happy Anniversary Aunt Mer and Uncle Vinnie we love you!

They were outside enjoying the afternoon when we got there, and right away my uncle gets out this riding truck for my son. Anthony ended up crashing into everything, the wall, the chair, the table even a tree. I couldn't look anymore! it was his first time driving and clearly he needs more practice.

Driving that truck clearly had some major impact on my little guy, more than the train ride! This morning while getting ready he told me he didn't want to go to school. When I asked him why, this was the answer:

It was hot out yesterday! My mom and I went to Kohl's in the morning while my son was at school. After lunch we all went in the pool. It was so refreshing.

I tried to teach my 3 1/2 year old the game of Marco Polo, but he didn't really understand. He liked that I would swim to find him but if I said Marco, he said Marco. it was very cute. Which inspired a word art freebie for all you pool goers out there.

My son had an evaluation today at Vision Therapy to see how much of an improvement he has made. When we started this quest to improve his eye sight, his vision was 20/400 in the left eye. Full time patching got us to 20/200, then 20/100. Vision Therapy has taken it from 20/100 to 20/30!!! I started crying and was in shock. I was shaking so much trying to text my husband the good news.

The first doctor I went to this past February told me THERE WAS NO HOPE, HE WOULD NEVER SEE. I didn't think we would see such an improvement in only 4 months when we started patching from the minute he woke up to the minute he went to bed.

Here's a pic of Dr. Press letting Anthony see the eye machine.. he doesn't use this machine for Anthony's testing but my little eye doctor in training likes to see all the equipment.

I hate Tuesdays because I head over to the nutritionist to get weighed and talk about my food for the week. Which inspired another word art freebie!!

The rest of our day was pretty normal. My son surprised me again with coming home from school and grabbing a magazine to look at!! I can't wait to get to vision therapy to tell them how much he's been looking at books.

Good Evening all! I really don't like Mondays!! Since my son started pre-k in April I'm always the first one up in the morning and the last one to go to bed in the evening. Some nights I'm only getting 5 hours sleep so when that alarm goes off I want to beat it with a bat!!!

This morning my son was up early had breakfast so I allowed him to hang out and watch TV on my bed while I read and answered some emails. I looked up at the clock and it was 8:15am OMG the bus comes 8:20/25am and he wasn't dressed yet!

I pulled the 3 1/2 year old out of bed and got him dressed super fast!! We were downstairs with a few minutes to spare and I was able to get my morning "cheesy" picture of him. He says he's a good "cheeser"...just love the cute things he says.

After he left I was able to get some scrapping and design time in! wooo hooo I used the "cheesy" picture to create a layout and also used the template I will be giving away for my first Challenge at NDISB. Get the FREE template here

The rest of the day was a pretty normal Monday, dashing off to vision therapy, nap time and then dinner. My husband worked late and my son was playing nicely in his room. I walked by and saw him READING A BOOK!!! Well he was pointing to the colors anyway.

I'm sure most of you are wondering why that's such a big deal, but my son's vision was so bad, that he hated books! He even hated it when I tried to read him a story. I grabbed the camera and filmed for 22 seconds. Here you can see him laying on his bedroom floor with all his toys looking at the book

New Store, New Look - Still looking for a Creative Team

If you have been wondering where I went I'm still around, but hardly scrapping. Since November my 3yr old son has been going to different doctors and having different testing for his eye sight and suspected learning disabilities.

My down time has been devoted to other things, like SLEEP!! I've only been able to scrap 5 layouts this year and our Valentine cards.

Earlier this month I set out on a quest to find a cool St. Patrick's Day kit to make my St. Patty cards for my wee little Irish boy. Besides Anna BV's Only The Lucky - which I used last year because I was on her CT, I couldn't find a kit I liked.

This failed hunt then put a spirit back in my soul and set me on my own mission to make all the elements for my card... that lead to late night designing, and trying different ideas then before I knew it I had more than 50 elements, 4 graffiti splatters and 18 papers. And I'm still designing!!! I am working on some word art and an alpa all of which will be the first kit I sell right here on my blog.

I'm so excited I wanted to post a preview.

Lets just hope I can figure out how to add the buy now button from ebay and work out how the download links work! That's the only thing stopping me. I will make a freebie too.

If you've been wondering where I've been or what I've been up too.. the answer is NOT SCRAPPING that's for sure. My son has been keeping me busy. I've suspected he might be ADD all year. I finally was able to get someone to listen to my concerns and he's being tested this Wednesday.

Besides that issue, he has Amblyopia in the right eye. We've been patching his left eye to try to get his brain to use the right, but the doctor didn't sound too hopeful at our appointment in Nov. I bought these eye patches for him and they've been working out great! He has to get used to them but it's much better than the sticky patches.

With any luck things won't be so crazy around here and I'll get back to making freebies and doing calendars.

Trick Or Treat by Scraps of Ellay

I've been using the kit Trick Or Treat by Scraps of Ellay to create our Halloween layouts.

There are so many cut elements of kids in costumes. My son had been asking me to be a witch so I scapped that story so I wouldn't forget it years to come. And I couldn't pass up creating a layout with him fast asleep at the dinner after trick or treating. Now I just have to make a few pages in between ;-)

yes I'm been missing in action. Haven't felt like blogging or doing much scrapping or design work. I spent most of the summer taking care of health issues. Then in Sept my family went on a 2 week vacation to Disney World. It took another two weeks to rest after we came home! I just started scrapping in the last two days.

I created these two layouts using I Heart Milk by Designs by Christi - which is on sale now so check it out! there is even a cute add on

and I made this double page layout about our Disney Trip using Dreamin by Digi-designs by Nicole

Working with a Template Tutorial & Freebie

My very first TUT - Working with a Template.

I've been taking workshop classes at Digi Scrapbook Mania and telling my sister-in-law Susan (hi Susan I know you read my blog) about them. She said it sounded like she could even learn something from these workshops.

Today we had to work with a template - which I've done several hundred times but I was surprised to see how many others hadn't. So I'm going to give you a quick lesson in using a template QUICKLY and more efficiently with short cuts. ((Mac users I don't know your short cut keys, but hopefully you can figure it out))

First here's a FREEBIE a Template called LOVE in psd format only. I created this layout for a clustering workshop so I turned it into a freebie since so many people gave me such wonderful feedback.

Now on with the tutorial
opening the "Teaching Template and follow along with me
since I already listed credits for Pimp My Picture by Dilo Designs I am going to continue working with that kit.

You can see that I have Photoshop Elements open with the folder of the kit next to it. That way I can see all the elements and papers and easily drag what I want over into Elements.

If you've never done that before just CLICK AND HOLD on the paper or element you want, then drag it right over into elements. Your cursor will have a little + under it as you are dragging it over. It does take some getting used to if you've never done it before.

Now that we have the paper in Photoshop, I'm going to click on the background layer of the template so when I drag over the paper it will be on top of the layer I want it.

By holding the SHIFT key when I drag it, it places that paper dead center.

Next I'm going to select another paper from the folder and drag it over also

Click on the layer that you want this paper to be, drag it onto the template. if you hold SHIFT down while you drag it will place the paper in the center.

You should have the hang of the dragging into Photoshop and dragging onto the template now. It takes some practice if you haven't done it before, but its much faster than clicking on File>Open>Look In

Now I want to "clip" or "group" that 2nd paper, with the layer. all you do is hold Ctrl and hit the letter G (Ctrl+G) POOF the paper is now clipped with that layer and LOOK it even has a shadow already because it's on the template layer!

Next I like to make my clipping permanent, because sometimes you accidentally move your grouped layer. By clicking Ctrl + E you will merge the clipping layer to the template layer.

the clipping and the merging comes in so handy if you are using a template with multi photo or paper areas. Or if you want to whip up a template quickly!

Lets continue to drag over a paper and clip it on the 3 other layers called papers. And if you don't like the papers you selected you can always drag over more and clip and merge until you're happy with how it looks.

Also before you "merge" you can move around the clipped paper to decide how you want the pattern to look.
here I have the 2nd block showing the pattern paper one way

and here I moved it around a little

I like the 2nd one, so I'm going to merge it now Ctrl+E

You also can see when you merge it that the Bounding Box changes size, since the paper is no longer 12x12

I finished my paper clippings, so I'm moving onto my swirl in the back. Maybe I'll use a swirl, maybe a paint splatter that's the great thing about templates - someone else did the composition for you so you just have to place the elements you like best!

Here I placed the swirl, it's still in it's original size. Please please please remember to RESIZE YOUR ELEMENTS! I see so many layouts with GIANT buttons or ribbons. Think about it this way, would you wear a shirt with giant buttons like that? No so why should your layout have to suffer?

Hold down the ALT key to resize any paper or element while maintaining the correct proportions.

You can already see that the smaller swirly is more pleasing to the eye. Then again you might be someone who likes the giant elements... My @$$ is giant enough so I make my elements smaller!

I did a little rotation of the swirl and hid the template's swirl layer. Now I can see that there seems to be an empty space after I hid that swirl layer. What do you think?

I'm going to duplicate that swirl layer. Fast way is to click Ctrl +J! I made the 2nd swirl a little smaller by holding Alt when resizing and rotated it. I am pleased with how that looks.

Moving onto the flowers

Drag over any flower you want to use, using the steps above. click on the flower layer so your flower element will be placed above that flower. You don't need to hold shift down to make it center, you can just drag the element and aim for that area on the template you want the flower to show up.

Sometimes I notice PSE gets a little freaky and will drop your dragged element to the center if you are holding shift or not, so don't worry if that happens.

And don't forget to resize!! Look how crazy big this flower looks in the original size! Designers create their elements larger because you get a higher quality product.

I'm using one flower so I hit Ctrl+J to duplicate it two more times. I moved the 2 other flowers over to the flower location on the template. I also rotated my little flowers so they each look a little different

Now here's a cool little thing. I don't feel like messing around with the shadows. What the template came with is good enough for me. Right click on the template's flower and a menu will show up. Move down and select "Copy Layer Style"

Move up to your flower element and right click on that and select "Paste Layer Style"

Do that with all 3 flowers, and make sure you hide the template's flower layers by clicking on the eyeball for that layer.

Time to add my current favorite photo of me with my son. I do the same thing, open my photos in the folder and drag over the picture into PSE. Then drag the photo onto the template. Rotate it a little to be the same angle as the photo layer, resize it, group it, merge it.

Do final tweaking to the layout. I changed the flower sizes and position then added a splatter over the swirls.

Now for those of you like Kacy who do not want to have their photos on the web... after you resize the photo to 600X600 so you can upload it to most digi-galleries, just blur out the photo! if you are a scrapper and you aren't participating on a scrap website out there you are missing out on a lot of knowledge and freebies!

here's how to blur
Ctrl+J to duplicate your photo. Go up to Filter>Blur>Gaussain Blur and set the blur to a little over 50%. This will blur out the faces and places just leaving enough to make out that there is a figure in the picture.

Group Ctrl+G your Blurred photo to your non blurred photo so you can still see the drop shadow.

And please non of this alien looking blurring of the eyes, it's creepy!

I really hope this helps some of you out there and gets Kacy on some sites!

Hello out there in blog land

I haven't been posting because I've been doing one scrapping competition after another since January. These competitions have really pushed me to become a better layout artist and I'm thrilled to announce that I am the winner of "This Scrapper's Got Talent" over at Stuff to Scrap.

here are my layouts from that competition
The first challenge was to create a layout using the title "I Am" with single words to describe yourself with a photo of yourself. (can you find my photo? my words are in the book)

the 2nd challenge was to create a double page layout about your top 10. I chose ten reasons I love my son!

3rd one was to journal. I wrote a wonderful story *giggle* about my mother.. if you don't check out any other of my layouts, read this one!!! it's one of my favorite emails, to my brother about HIS mother... after all if she's this stupid she can't be MY mother.

Challenge 4 had to be monochromatic

Then the final layout challenge was a killer. I thought about it for 2 days before I got to work. here are the directions
use one kit only
double page layout
3 photos all must either be extraction, blended photo, or selective coloring
use 6 papers, 2 solid, 2 pattern, 2 our choice.
my first part:

Once you finish this half you had to submit it and were not allowed to move anything.

2nd part was to including 15 elements from the kit we used. And use
1 fastener of some kind
1 frame
duplicate one element 5 times.
all other elements may be used once or duplicated.

I was thrilled when I found out I was a winner.. I actually found out a few hours before it was posted (but didn't know what place I won) because I received a congratulations email and was asked to become a part of Stuff To Scrap's CT

I could hardly sleep that and couldn't wait to see the post in the morning to find out what place I came in. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw I was the 1st place winner!

Can you see I'm still smiling from there?

So that's where I've been on the challenge circuit. Now I have to get busy making July's calendar template and see if I can make some papers ;-)

OH and I bought myself a New Laptop and PhotoShop CS so maybe I'll really get creating soon!! Next I hope to get a new camera but it might wait a few more months.

this week's challenge is to create a chart/graph or something to show how your life is divided.

"Dare Flares:
*The main design of the layout should be in the form of or based around a graph or a chart. It doesn’t *have* to be a pie chart or a bar graph… feel free to be creative here. As long as it’s something visual that clearly shows the different areas of your life.

*Each “section” of your life should contain a title (to show what that section represents).

*Each section must also be distinctive and able to stand alone. Have each section vary in size, shape, or color… use a form of measurement or number… or even images and text. Again… feel free to be creative here!

*Photos are not a must but if you choose to use them, personal and/or stock photos are acceptable.

Make it as clean and graphic as you like, or as layered and jumbled as you like. You can make it all deep and serious, or exaggerated and funny. Just make sure each area can be recognized. And as always, have FUN with it and be expressive!!! I can’t wait to see what you create!"

It seems like a prefect challenge for me because I feel like I'm being pulled into different directions. Check it out for yourself.

At some point I'm going to make a template out of it, but not until I have I have a program that does text paths. all that swirly text was done with warp text in PSE a few words at a time, then rotated to fit around the swirl. It drove me nuts, so there's no way I can send this out as a template now.

I did manage to get my mom's calendar done early this month but failed to pass it on. so without further ado, here is March's fee calendar. ENJOY!

I've been busy "racing"

I don't know if any of you are also doing the Amazing Digi Scrap Race but it's been fun and challenging. This week we had to design "Artist Trading Card" and I had no idea what they even were! After a few questions and looking at the gallery for examples, I ended up designing something in the size they ask for but more my style.

My friend and racing partner have a blog where we are showing off our work just for the race. take a look if you'd like.

I finished my racing challenges early this week so I'm trying to catch up on my challenges at Scrap Matters

I did two speed scraps today.. one at a new site - which I'll NEVER go back to again. Scrapping is suppose to be fun, not stressful that you didn't follow the evil speed hostess directions exactly.

Do you know what that means? IT'S BACK UP YOUR FILES DAY!

Spend some time back up your work, if you haven't since last month. You never know when your computer's hard drive will crash and you will lose all of your masterpieces.

You should have THREE redundant systems. I learned this after working with servers for 10 years! So your computer's hard drive.. an external hard drive.. and maybe burn some CDs... anyway you can do it, at least have a single BACK UP!

Here is another WONDERFUL thing I just learned about.. you can back up your bookmarks! Over the years I've lost so many good bookmarks from computer crash or getting a new computer and nobody moved them over for me.. so when I read that you can backup your bookmarks too I was thrilled.

Check out Delicious. You sign up for FREE and you can import all your current bookmarks. I did it last night so I still have to 'tag' them so they will be better organized but if my computer goes down, I'll still have that neat little Thank You note generator that I used when my son was born.

Unlike most people I do the speed scrap as the directions are posted, which usually makes me one of the first ones done...unless of course my son is screaming.

I have had a very trying month in December so my scrapping time was limited. I decided to start the New Year strong, doing project 365 and getting back into challenges at Scrap Matters.

As I was checking out the new kits in the Scrap Matter's shop I found this AWESOME kit. I clicked on it and low and behold it was done by AnnaBV! I have been so out of it I didn't even know she did this kit. Check it out it is prefect for your New Year's Resolutions.

I was the one who actually gave Anna the idea for this kit because I was looking for a kit to use to celebrate my 3rd Anniversary of quitting smoking. She expanded the idea and Resolutions was born. I am sure I'll be creating more and more designs with this kit!

I have TWO external hard drives... and a long time again when I had none, my computer crashed and I lost many photos of when I first started dating my husband. So there is no way I want to lose the photos of my son, so I have two.

In posting my 'public service announcement' on a bunch of boards yesterday, some ladies started talking about Mozy...I never heard of them so I checked it out. http://mozy.com/

I did -not- sign up for it YET but I'm thinking..yeah I need a 3rd backup in case of a fire! yeah that's it!

I don't get any special reward points or anything for telling you about this, I just thought it was very useful information!

I'd just like to remind everyone to back up your photos and scrap files to an external hard drive.... and when you can, buy a 2nd external hard drive to back up your first!

You never know when your computer or your hard drive is just going to go fry. So to prevent crying and thousands of dollars to try to find someone to retrieve your memories... BACK UP YOUR WORK!

Doc Brown - 20 FREE papers

No I didn't fall off the planet...but almost

If you have been collecting my series of papers you might have wondered what happen to me. Well I was sick for a while. Without going into details for all the world to see I had to take some time off and heal. I am feeling better physically but emotionally it took it's toll on me. I'm really lucky to have a few friends who were really there for me to let me, because my family was the pits during most of this ordeal.

OH and right when my drama all started I was invited by an awesome designer to be on her Creative Team! So I'm now designing for Man in the Moon Designs and don't forget about my first CT job AnnaBV Designs

So now that I'm feeling better I've been trying to get organized again and create some layouts. I designed some Christmas Cards for friends in return for letting them use the examples on my new Facebook Page and my new website I plan to launch in the new year.

I just finished our Christmas Card in the last two days and still haven't mailed them out yet! Guess everyone will get them after Christmas this year... oh well!

So onto the missing Brown Papers. I finished them right before Halloween, and used one in my Halloween card

I just zipped them tonight and decided I better come over to my blog and post them before next year *grin*
